Overview
Atlas is a wellness and journaling app designed to help users track their thoughts, moods, and habits in one intuitive space. Built for a mobile-first audience, the app focuses on mindfulness through design — aiming to create a calm, distraction-free environment for self-reflection.
The Atlas team approached me to redesign their user interface from the ground up, with a goal to improve usability, visual consistency, and emotional connection through thoughtful product design.
The Challenge
While the original version of Atlas had a solid feature set, its interface lacked polish, hierarchy, and a consistent design system. The challenge was to design a UI that felt emotionally grounded yet digitally crisp, appealing to both wellness beginners and experienced users — while reducing friction and cognitive load.
My Role
I led the full UI redesign process and collaborated closely with the product team:
UX audit and usability analysis of the current app
Wireframes and updated app flow
Full mobile UI design system
Custom iconography and component library
Moodboard and visual tone exploration
Prototype build in Figma for development handoff
Design Approach
The visual design centered around calm neutrals, soft gradients, and tactile UI elements. Typography choices prioritized legibility with a sense of openness and breathing room.
Key features included an interactive mood tracker, a daily journaling flow with prompts, and progress visualization tools — all designed to feel lightweight and frictionless. I also introduced a modular design system so new features could be added consistently over time.
Results
3x increase in daily user engagement within 30 days of redesign launch
App store rating improved from 3.7 to 4.6 based on updated UX
Reduced onboarding drop-off by 45% due to simplified initial flow
Positive user feedback calling the new interface “soothing,” “easy to use,” and “beautifully minimal”
Design system adopted across both iOS and Android versions
Featured in a top UI/UX newsletter as an example of “intentional digital calm”
